We are glad to announce the third event in a new series of four events in the Western Cape that will make up the official Western Cape Marathon Mountain bike series for 2015. The series is targeted at the young, the novice and the family but also for the experienced rider. The routes are aimed to be fun and friendly, no technical and specialised bits that only the pro’s can ride. The series caters for those looking to get into mountain biking as a sport, the weekend riders and the family conscious.
With great TV coverage, good prize money with provincial points up for grabs, the serious riders are drawn in to compete into a festival of mountain biking.
The third event of the series takes place in Hermanus, where in the last two years a whole mountain biking revolutions has taken the little town by storm.
Back when the Cape Epic first came through the town there were just open sand roads that some mountain bikers did training rides on. Now with the help of Wines 2 Whales, Jan van Schalkwyk, Deon Ferreira and other passionate mountain bikers have been building trails that are reshaping the landscape around Hermanus! Making it a mountain biking playground that’s second to none.
Choose the idyllic life with sea, sun, whales and Mountain biking! We’ll bring great meals and snacks, while you share the battle scars and war stories with your mountain bike buddies.
Route Description
Marathon – current distance 65km – 1500m ascent
The marathon distance will provide you with the very best experience that the Hemel & Aarde valley has on offer. You will race will be very diverse in its offering with long open climbs, jeep track, farm roads, fynbos trails, forest hand-built trails with great bridges and “roller coaster” like wooded paths. The route will be in a clock-wise direction and will first head up to the valley ceiling till you descend back down to the lower valley and onto the playground. Leave some juice in the tank as you will need to climb back up to the dam and around it to get to the finish line!
Half-Marathon – current distance – 37km – 800m ascent
The half-marathon will give you a great all round experience and a good taste for what’s on offer in the Hemel & Aarde valley! The route sets out in a clock-wise direction and will first take you up the valley before joining the marathon route for a short while, until splitting off onto some great single-track. A long steady climb will take participants back up the valley and around the dam to the finish.
Fun Race – current distance – 20km – 400m ascent
The fun race will give participants a nice countryside route on famous wines farms also heading clock-wise with scenic views over the valley.
Fun Ride – current distance 10km – 199m ascent
The fun ride will ride around the dam on dual track and farms roads, with views over the valley and across the dam.
