Heavy Rains in the Overberg – May 2021
A cut-off low caused absolute devastation throughout the Overberg early May. The Hemel & Aarde Valley received just over 300mm of rain in under two days, with a consistent rain only changing in intensity over a full day and night. Though the town did not have much damage or flooding, the farms in the valley had countless mudflows, roads washing away and bridges becoming impossible to cross.
Sadly our trail network suffered as well. With the De Bos Dam filling up to capacity (and some) early on in the storms, the Onrus River flooded like it hasn’t in a few years. As the water levels raised it started touching on most of our bridges and we lost a few. The trails also washed away with large scale erosion in some places, leaving a mop-up effort of note for the maintenance team!
The community has come out and offered help where they can, but this will be a slow rebuild, though a shortage of materials is always a problem…
Below some photos of the damages.
April 2021 – Walker Bay Outdoor
After it’s absence in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the all new Walker Bay Outdoor returned to Hermanus. Previously known as the “Walker Bay Extreme”, the WBO had a total of 16 events over 4 days, all in our lovely town.
Hermanus Adventures did the routes for 5 of these events, which comprised 2 trail runs and 3 MTB routes. We hosted over 500 athletes over the weekend in the Hemel & Aarde Valley and it was a spectacular weekend with perfect weather!
Looking forward to the an even better and bigger WBO in 2022!!
DUSTY FEET VIRTUAL CHALLENGES
After losing our on nearly all the MTB events planned for 2020, local MTB enthusiast and owner of Dusty Feet, Kobus Stofberg, has launched a 5 part MTB Virtual Challenge series which will be taking place in Hermanus. Aimed mainly at locals, participation is free and you will get a score for your attempts.
Thank you Kobus for putting some “gees” back into the MTB community with a bit of local competition!
